Guatemala Sportfishing
Pacific Sailfish & Marlin
Guatemala sportfishing features some of the world's most productive
waters for Pacific sailfish and marlin. Most sailfish in Guatemala are
normally found in an area called the "Pocket", a deep underwater canyon
that is 15 miles wide. On many days fishing will start between only 5
to 20 miles offshore. On other days we may run as far as 50 miles if
that is what it takes to put you on fish.
The fishing is good year round in Guatemala, but most consider the
high season to be November through May, as this is the dry season. But
don’t be mistaken, the “off-season” can be a great time to visit
Guatemala. The rains occur mostly in the mountains and it normally only
rains on the coast at night. The gentle sea breezes will keep you
comfortable during the day. We find the summer weather here to be much
nicer than Florida by comparison.
Pacific Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado (Dolphin), and Yellow Fin Tuna are
the most common species in the Guatemala. But make no mistake about it,
this is the best sailfishing spot in the world. On average, you can
experience 15 to 20 bites a day and during the peak season of November
through May, 40 or more bites is not uncommon. Again, don’t forget the
off-season. Over the years, we have caught over 30 Pacific sailfish in
one day during each month of the year, and the summer features some of
our best marlin fishing. The top Guatemala sportfishing boats release
upwards to 2,000 Pacific sailfish a year. These Pacific Sailfish
average 80 to 90 pounds, but fish over 100 pounds are common.
It's no big secret that the captains and mates in
Guatemala see more billfish than anywhere else in the world.
